Baroque is a site-specific installation that reflects the condition of being both a citizen and a foreigner. The title references Édouard Glissant’s Poetics of Relation (1997) and his interpretation of the Baroque. The work consists of fifteen barriers arranged in a structured path, evoking the bureaucratic labyrinth faced by those who must constantly renew their legal status, navigating obstacles and discrimination. Thus, the installation becomes a metaphor for the institutional barriers that regulate access to citizenship.
Christian Offman, born in 1993 in Nyabisindu, Butare in Rwanda, lives and works between Munich and Bologna. He moved to Italy in 1999, growing up between Rwanda and Italy: the sum of these two cultural and geographical poles is reflected in his aesthetics and practice. The focal points of his research are identity, memory, and historical repression, which drive the contradictions and ideological flaws that demarcate postcolonial contemporaneity.
