The Ilısu Dam, a human-centred “civilisation” project, displaced some 80 thousand people in addition to the history it submerged. It also destroyed the Tigris Valley, which has significant biodiversity.

Ateş Alpar, born in 1988 in Nusaybin, Turkey, lives and works in Istanbul. He conveys images to the viewer in a detailed and meticulous way with real and metaphorical meaning. He works with various media, including video, performance, sound, photography, and site-specific installations. At the centre of his artistic production is a focus on issues such as borders, security tools, cultural destruction/colonial politics and identity fluidity, the ambiguity of history and the concept of memory.
